Marie Loftus came to live and work in Limerick in 1981. She has strong family connections with Co Mayo in the West of Ireland and her passion for the people and landscape of that area were her inspiration for her early paintings. As a mature student she attended Limerick School of Art & Design to study Fine Art and graduated in 1998. Since then she has established and run her own Studio/Gallery holding workshops in life drawing and painting.
Her current theme is inspired by her interest in stories of emigration and the bond that ties first, second and third generations to their native land. Her contemporary approach to her paintings expressively connects the present age with the past - superimposing black and white images on canvas and vibrant reds and oranges to evoke the warmth of the homeplace and the emotion of the landscape.
